Foundation professorships are intended to recognize creative, self-motivated exemplars of the professional ideal college professor as recognized by his/her colleagues. More specifically, the purposes of the Foundation Professorships are to provide opportunities for:

  1. Recognition of those faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding performance as teachers and who are recognized by their colleagues as exemplifying outstanding qualities relating to the University's stated missions in teaching, service, and research.
  2. Furthering the recipient's individual professional development, with the anticipated expectation that it will also benefit the subject discipline, academic unit, and University.

With the above background in mind, the following benefits are awarded to the individual by the University:

  1. Extra salary stipend of $5,000 for each year of the professorship.
  2. Recognition at appropriate University academic ceremonies (e.g., Commencement exercises), in institutional publications, and beyond the campus where feasible.

ELIGIBILITY: All full-time, tenured faculty members holding academic rank, including departmental chairs, are eligible to be selected for these professorships. The period of the award shall be two (2) years, with the individuals eligible for reappointment after an interval of two (2) years since the end of the previous award.

PROCEDURES FOR SELECTION: Selection of Foundation Professors shall be by nomination or application using the EKU Application, Evaluation, and Recommendation Forms for Foundation Professorships. There shall be extensive peer review and endorsements by the appropriate academic units (departmental, college and University levels) through their established Promotion and Tenure Committees. Selection shall be based on the standard criteria for promotion, tenure, and merit. Final selection shall be made by an ad hoc committee appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research.

EXPECTATIONS: The Foundation Professor is expected to serve as an exemplar for the academic community. It is expected that the unique talents of the recipients will be shared with colleagues, in particular with junior members of the University faculty.
